Playing tips and a fun fact
Look for the animal you recognize first, even if it is not at the top of the list. RAY and EEL are compact starting points. A group might sort found words into swimmers, bottom dwellers, and things that stay attached, allowing some discussion where the categories overlap.
An octopus has eight arms lined with suckers, which help it explore and handle objects. Its shape is quite different from a fish with fins, so it makes an enjoyable drawing prompt. When the puzzle is complete, sketch an imaginary reef and add three creatures from the list, leaving enough space for each to have its own corner.
Ideas to extend the activity
- Draw a reef with three creatures.
- Compare fins, flippers, and arms.
- Name something found in a tide pool.
