US States Word Search (Large Print)

Take a paper road trip through this US states word search. The bank includes a selection of single-word state names that fit our large-print grids, from short UTAH to longer MINNESOTA. It is not a list of all fifty states, and there is no capital-city quiz attached. The aim is a satisfying letter hunt with familiar geographic names.

US Letter, one puzzle page and one answer page. Easy level.

Playing tips and a fun fact

Start with a state whose spelling you know well, then use the printed list for names you see less often. Several entries end in A, so check the beginning and middle of a line before circling it. At a group table, participants can name a landscape they associate with a state without needing to have traveled there.

Alaska and Hawaii are the two states that are not part of the contiguous group of forty-eight. Their locations can spark a simple map conversation after the puzzle. Draw an imaginary route between three listed states, or describe the scenery on a pretend postcard. An atlas is welcome for discussion, but it is never required to solve the grid.

Ideas to extend the activity

  • Plan an imaginary three-state route.
  • Write a landscape postcard.
  • Find Alaska and Hawaii on a map.
