Board and Card Games Word Search (Large Print)

A shuffled deck and a box of wooden pieces invite people to sit down together. This word search collects the language of board and card games, from a single DIE to familiar chess pieces. It is a good opening activity for a game afternoon because no one needs to know the rules of every game in the list. Finding a word is enough.

US Letter, one puzzle page and one answer page. Easy level.

Playing tips and a fun fact

Start by separating objects from actions. CARD and PAWN are things you can hold; DEAL and SHUFFLE describe what you might do. That gives a group an easy way to discuss the entries before searching. Partners can take alternating turns finding words, borrowing the turn-taking rhythm of a tabletop game.

The singular of dice is die, so both words can appear naturally in a discussion of games. A chessboard has sixty-four squares, which makes a useful drawing challenge after the puzzle. You might also invent a very simple paper game using found words for actions. Keep the rules short enough that everyone can try a turn immediately.

Ideas to extend the activity

  • Invent a three-rule paper game.
  • Draw a chessboard pattern.
  • Sort objects from game actions.
